Changing Careers
“Why do you want to change careers? Is it because
you don’t feel motivated or challenged in your current job? Are
you under paid or undervalued? Are you experiencing a personality clash
with your boss or with one or more of your workmates? Do you need to work
more sociable hours?”
“If some of the above are your reasons for wanting to change your
career, then maybe it is only a change of job that is required to ease
your problems. However, if you have more deeply rooted reasons for wanting
to change your career, then you will have to plan your career change carefully.”
The 10 Step Career Change Plan
Your Career Change Plan should be divided into several clear steps.
- Step 1. Identify your personal strengths, abilities
and skills.
- Step 2. Explore the key factors likely to impact
on your choice of career or job.
- Step 3. Gather information about the range of career
areas that you are interested in working in.
- Step 4. Identify jobs and careers where your strengths,
abilities and skills are most valued.
- Step 5. Research the entry route and qualifications
required to work in the job(s) you have identified.
- Step 6. If additional training and/or education
are required, identify suitable courses that may be pursued.
- Step 7. If additional training is not required,
identify relevant job vacancies that you may be eligible to apply for.
- Step 8. Prepare a good quality Curriculum
Vitae.
- Step 9. Apply for suitable job vacancies.
- Step 10. When called for a job interview, prepare
for the interview in advance. Do the interview and always follow
it up afterwards for feedback.
